Torque Converter 101

Without getting too far into the field of physics, your vehicle’s torque converter is the mechanism that allows you to stop while keeping your engine idling. Thus, it does for your automatic transmission-equipped automobile what a clutch does for a manual model. It allows for a disconnect between the engine and transmission. Because of the torque converter, the engine can keep producing power even when it is not engaging with the transmission. Key components in the torque converter are the impeller, turbine, and stator. Like the other transmission-related parts, the torque converter is lubricated by transmission fluid. If your car’s torque converter is failing, you’ll likely notice signs similar to other transmission issues. For example, you may begin to detect slipping gears where your auto moves in and out of or between gears independently. Also, your vehicle may exhibit difficult shifting or may not shift at all. The burning odor of an overheated until and a transmission fluid leak may also be indicators. Because these signals can point to a number of related problems, we’ll need to check your vehicle to make an accurate diagnosis. Often, the transmission fluid in an automobile with a bad torque converter will appear cloudy. If this component is indeed the source of your trouble, the most common remedy is a replacement. Regardless of the cause or the cure, however, you can always rely on us for transmission system assistance.
